it’s not the cutest thing we’ve ever made…

…but it has got to be one of the most fun!

bears

bears

We started an activity book called Before Five in a Row. It is supposed to enhance reading readiness and I just thought it would be fun to do together. The premise of the book is basically to read a certain book 5 times and each time do an activity that has something to do with the story. This week’s book is Jesse Bear, What Will You Wear? So we made a Gracie Bear and a Mia Bear. They had fun deciding if their bear would be a boy or girl, wear pants or a dress, and finally what fabric. The real fun came when it was time to decide on accessories!!!

I did my best to construct these quickly. But sometimes trying to do stuff fast and easy turns out slow and hard . I was having one of those, “what did I get myself into?” moments. I can always count on them to love it. They are just so proud of what they picked out and couldn’t be happier.

I’m Loving…old books.

I have had an obsession for old books for as long as I can remember. First it was children’s books, but now it’s all kinds. I’ve never done anything with them, but I just like to have them around. I’ve started to use them around the house, but I’m really enjoying utilizing them in different ways.

It seems like it was a couple of years ago when I saw an article in a magazine about book sculptures and various results you get when folding the pages. I tried it and I’m HOOKED! I do it when I’m watching TV and trying to wind down. I find it pretty relaxing for some reason. I love the smell and the feel of the old pages. My favorite part is seeing random words and titles and reinterpreting them to fit my own life.

These can be easily displayed in a group or hung on a wall using plate hangers. I have a few other ideas for these treasures of mine. I better get started before I turn into some crazy pack-rat lady, or is it too late?

I’ll leave you with a picture of my 2 little ladies. My Mia decided to dress them both all by herself today. Do I have a future stylist on my hands? Watch out Rachel Zoe!

a tiny party.

September 22, 2008 at 9:59 pm | In family, kidstuff | 4 Comments

It was my Gracie’s 3rd birthday and the theme was “a tiny party”. It fits her so well because she is obsessed with all things miniature. She absolutely loves it when things are “just her size” and totally obsessed with the “baby” version of EVERYTHING!!

I started with planning the setting of our tiny party. We built a 10 inch tall table out of plywood and covered it with grass green minky dot fabric. I made little cushions to look like mushroom tops. The ceiling decorations are paper flowers from Martha Stewart’s line from Michael’s. I was hoping they would brighten up the space and they looked to me like sunshine.

We started the party by making miniature paper bag puppets. They are from Martha Stewart @ Michael’s, as well. I could go crazy in that store! A couple of days before the party I actually saw a tiny party in a box for $15 from Martha Stewart @ Michael’s. Too bad. But I was happy to make all these things for Gracie.

After some outdoor games, the munchkins came in for a tiny feast. Mini grilled cheeses, baby hot dogs. I made these faux bois placemats. It just added to the whole woodland vibe from the mushrooms. We enjoyed minitinis and smoothies.

And no party is complete without a birthday wish!!

Gracie’s friends left with some lovely LITTLE parting gifts. A mini crayon roll, a personalized magnet, and of course tons of candy!

Isn’t she worth it? It was so much fun to plan this and even more fun to see Gracie’s face. We had such a grand time at such a tiny party! But what to do with all of these decorations? I tried convincing Mia to have a fairy/pixie party, but she’s already got her mind set on a pool party!

Misadventure in Felting III, the final chapter!

So I decided to give it one more shot. This time I set out to use sweaters that I bought dirt cheap from a garage sale. They had to be a good color and atleast 75% wool. Before putting them into the washer, I cut open the sleeves and cut down the sides. I washed and dried them about 5 times in hot, soapy water. Since then, I have learned NOT to put them in the dryer. “They” say that this only shrinks them without felting the fibers. Who knew? Not me, being the anti-researching crafter that I am. Sorry I don’t have any pictures of this process. They don’t make for groundbreaking photos anyway.

This is the 1st thing I made with my freshly felted sweaters. Baby shoes for the Michael Miller baby bootie contest. Of course I used this pattern. Why stress if I don’t have to? And no, I didn’t win. not.even.close.

This has to be, hands down, my favorite felted project. I have been meaning to make my little weinie a dog bed. He is a burrower. Meaning he loves to be under the covers. If you are relaxing on the couch with a blanket, here he comes using his little nose to fanagle his way under the covers. Which can be quite a health hazard for him with a few kids who love to plop down onto the sofa.

I love it! And the best part is that Ziggy does, too! A future pattern in the works? What do you think? We’ll just have to see.

So once again the felting bug bit me. I thought I would try something a little easier.

 wool roving

 plus jingle bells

equal jingle balls. I wrapped about 6 bells in each ball.

wrapped it up in wool yarn.

tied them in toddler tights like a string of pearls.

after a run in the hot, soapy washing machine.

it was fun cutting these out because I was not sure what to expect.

well, here they are. and there is one guy that can’t get enough of them. his favorite toys!!

all I have to say is…T.G.I.F.

this weekend is way overdue! Here’s a quick little project that I did today. Good for those of you going to Home Improvement Mart this weekend!

I just applied this paint sample card to an adhesive lined magnetic sheet and cut the middle out with an exacto knife. Since I have commitment issues when it comes to what gets hung up, this project fit me like a glove!

Have a great weekend! We are starting ours with a little fiesta with wild rice, corn and cheese quesadillas. As well as this recipe that I have been dying to try!

Chuy’s Jalapeno Ranch Dip - the Real Deal

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mix first 5 ingredients in a blender until smooth.
  2. Stir in ranch mix with a whisk.
  3. Chill and serve.

Misadventures in Felting I

September 4, 2008 at 8:17 am | In felting, whichcraft? | 2 Comments

First off, let me start by saying that I watch way too much TV. I love my craft shows! Felting has been quite a highlight on a couple of those shows. I became very intrigued by the idea of felting and tried to give it a shot. Let me give you an idea of the sort of gal that I am… Most people would tell you that I am a wonderful gourmet cook. A sort of food snob that loves made from scratch items like bread and pasta. Do you want to know a secret? I am selectively lazy!! I only do it to keep from going to the store! Hours of cooking in lieu of a 5 minute car ride. Yes, I know it sounds crazy, but I never claimed to be sane!!So with that being said, I did all of my experimenting with what I had around the house. Yah know, that may have been the problem!

A friend had given me some wool roving awhile back. I never knew what I was going to do with it, but I thought I’d hang on to it anyway. Well, it turned out to be the key ingredient to my felting adventures! After seeing it done on TV, I decided to try my luck at a scarf.

1.  I cleared off the kitchen counter and placed little “strips” of the wool in a long rectangle. Then I placed more wool at a 90* angle to the rectangle and trimmed it up.

2.  I generously poured hot soapy water all over it and massaged it for about 10 minutes. I carefully flipped it over and gently massaged the other side for what seemed like an eternity…probably 10 minutes. I could tell that the fibers were starting to fuse together, but it was still very fragile. And this is probably where the bamboo mat would have been helpful. To roll it in a more secure way. But I didn’t have one, so I just went on.

3. This is the point where I wrung the water out and put it into a washing machine full of hot water… and VOILA!!

Sad, I know. That’s what happens when you are a rebel crafter! Following directions is not one of my fine points. So I started ALL over and when I got to step 3 I carefully wrung it out. Dunked it in ice cold water, wrung it out. Dunked it in a large bowl of hot water, wrung it out. I did this about 5 more times. And then I went back to step 2 and started it all over again…even put it back in the washing machine.

This is what I ended up with after trimming the sides. It was a pitiful sight. Only about 4 inches wide. But I swear it was half an inch thick. Think Brillo pad!! After all this effort, I couldn’t turn back now. I proceeded to needlefelt some wool yarn onto this scarf. That was pretty quick and easy, but it seemed a bit of a waste. “You can put lipstickon a pig, but you can’t call it a lady.”  I had alot of fun doing it, but I don’t think I’ll be trying it anytime soon. It is alot harder than it looks. After all that, my hands were orange and dry, my kitchen smelled like a barnyard, and my baby sister has a new stylish scarf. BUT SHE BETTER NOT SAY THAT SHE GOT IT FROM ME!!!!

rethinking the t-shirt.

August 28, 2008 at 9:12 pm | In family, sewing, whichcraft? | 14 Comments

As a mom… better yet a mom who sews, I always have the urge to make my kiddos some clothes. Time is an issue. I don’t want to slave over something just to have them grow out of it next week. When I do sew them something, one of my biggest incentives is that my youngest will eventually wear it.

Well, I found a solution that works for me! A solution that will give them something made with love in a jiffy! I decided to bring the T-shirt dress back! Why didn’t I think of this sooner? I think it all started with the tiered skirts.  Such a cute result from such an easy technique.

This one is made from a 2t shirt and has layered tiers. I kept the entire length of the shirt to act as the main body of the dress. I make my tiers about 10-20″ longer than the previous one, depending on how gathered I want it.

This one has got to be my favorite! Instead of keeping the length of the shirt, I wanted to try an empire waist. I cut the shirt about 3″ from the armpits. The tiers are about 10″ longer than the previous one. I wanted a subtle progression. It came out just as I had imagined it.

This one is a playful little baby doll dress. I cut this tank top right below the arm pit. I used giant rick rack to create a little bit of a scalloped edge. This is Gracie’s favorite. It is pink. To be honest, it was supposed to be for my 4 yr. old but it turned out just a bit short. Like “I see London” short. Bummer, but she had a positive attitude and wants me to get started on her Snow White costume. A mother’s work is never done!

got it covered

August 23, 2008 at 6:29 pm | In cleaning and organizing, sewing, whichcraft? | 4 Comments

My 1st sewing machine has been sitting out since my cousin has been here. Now that she’s gone, I can finally put it away. But not before I get rid of that sad.little.torn.vinyl.cover.  It was so easy since I took the original cover apart and used it for a template. I pieced and quilted the pockets. I forgot how tranquil quilting can be. I feel so proud that I started a project and finished it! This was my Saturday afternoon therapy.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend! We sure will!!

quick and easy.

We made this! We actually made homemade sushi. And you know what, it didn’t taste homemade. My husband and I took a class @ Central Market. We had so much fun. We rolled, we ate, we drank. It felt like a first date…a good one, of course.  Between the white boy and the asian girl, he turned out to be the Sushi Master. Who knew? After the class, I still didn’t think we would ever make it again.

But fast forward to several weeks later and here we are. It cost about $80 to feed 7 humans sushi til’ they popped. It was so much fun, and super easy. This was always one of those tasks that seemed way too intimidating. Boy, was I wrong! We’ll be doing that again, and YOU should, too. Let me know how it goes!!

Here is one more super quick and easy project. I finally made something to corral all of my puppy’s “what-nots”. Brush, leash, and yes, his perfume! This project took me about 30 minutes from start to finish. I took some upholstery fabric that I had and cut out a rectangle with rounded corners. Why the rounded corners? Much easier to put binding on. The pockets are made of 3 seperate pieces that are gradually shorter. The top edge of the pockets are finished with scrap binding. Figure out how deep you want your pockets and stitch it closed, starting with the longest piece. It is closest to the main rectangular piece. Continue to sew the bottom of the pockets closed and a seam down the middle to divide the pockets. Bind the whole thing and add a handle at the top. My directions are blurred because my mind is currently mush. But this could easily be figured out, just by looking at the photo.
